Toilet Cistern Float Valve Repair in Orpington

Introduction

This job involved replacing a faulty toilet float valve for a residential customer in Orpington. A failing float valve is one of the more common causes of a toilet that won't stop running or refill properly, and in this case the valve had deteriorated to the point where it needed full removal of the cistern to access and fit correctly, restoring the toilet to proper working order.

Project Overview

The customer had attempted to fix the faulty float valve themselves before getting in touch, but wasn't able to resolve the issue, a fairly common outcome with cistern repairs, since access can be more awkward than it first appears without the right tools or experience. On inspection, it was clear the valve needed replacing rather than repairing, and doing this properly meant removing the cistern entirely to get full access to the fitting, rather than trying to work around it in place and risk a poor seal or a repeat failure further down the line. Once removed, the new float valve was fitted, the cistern reconnected to the water supply, and the whole unit refitted securely. Everything was then tested thoroughly to make sure the water was filling to the correct level and shutting off properly once full, with no leaks or running water afterwards.

Before/After

After. Before.
Before
After

Before the repair, the cistern had a faulty float valve that wasn't shutting off properly, leaving the toilet either running constantly or not filling as it should. After the valve was replaced and the cistern refitted, the toilet was filling and stopping correctly as intended, with the issue fully resolved.

Result

The toilet is now working properly, with the float valve replaced and the cistern refitted and fully tested. A simple, common household plumbing issue like this can be trickier than it first looks once a cistern needs removing for proper access, which is often exactly where a DIY attempt runs into trouble, and why getting a qualified plumber in to fix it correctly the first time saves both hassle and further damage down the line.
